Wiley H. Bates Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Wiley H. Bates Memorial Scholarship was established by Clarence Ross, Sr. and the Wiley H. Bates Class of 1966 to honor Mr. Wiley H. Bates, a wealthy black businessman, educator and politician. Mr. Bates donated $500 toward the purchase of land to build a new black high school that opened in 1933 and was named Wiley H. Bates High School in his honor. Each year the Wiley H. Bates Legacy Center sponsors one or more $500 scholarships to be awarded to worthy students of Anne Arundel County and Annapolis.

Lillian G. Chambers-Burgess Endowment Fund

The Lillian G. Chambers-Burgess Endowment Fund was established from a donation to the WHBLC from Ms. Chambers-Burgess’s estate. The fund was established to honor Ms. Chambers-Burgess, an Annapolis and Anne Arundel County resident and to insure that support to the Bates Legacy Center and it’s scholarship in perpetuity through additional donations and bequests.
